JOB DESCRIPTION
A Lighting Artist plays a key role in crafting visually stunning environments by designing and implementing lighting that enhances mood, storytelling, and gameplay. It is a collaboration with the Lead Artist, Environment Art, Level Design, and VFX team in order to implement atmospheres and lead the player’s attention based on the artistic direction, gameplay design, technological limitations and production deadlines.
The main and routine tasks of the Lighting Artist are to:
- Design and implement lighting setups for game environments, characters, and cinematics to enhance visual quality and mood
- Collaborate with Art directors, Level designers and Level artists to achieve the desired artistic vision while maintaining gameplay clarity
- Ensure consistency in lighting across scenes and levels, adhering to the artistic and technical standards of the project
- Optimize lighting for performance across various platforms, ensuring minimal impact on frame rates and memory usage
- Work with shaders and post-processing effects (e.g., color grading, bloom, shadows) to enhance the overall visual Ambiance / Aesthetic
- Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to lighting systems in collaboration with technical artists and other related teams
- Contribute to the development of tools and workflows to improve lighting efficiency and flexibility
- Stay up-to-date with industry trends, tools, and techniques related to lighting in games
QUALIFICATIONS
- Experienced as a Lighting Artist in the game, film, or CG industry.
- Strong understanding of lighting principles, including color theory, shadowing, and exposure.
- Solid technical knowledge of how to create run time lighting in game engines.
- Experience with real-time lighting techniques and optimization for performance.
- Familiarity with PBR (Physically Based Rendering) pipelines and HDR lighting workflows.
- Knowledge of the game development process and game production pipeline
- Good communication skills, positive attitude, and great work ethic
- Ability to work in a highly collaborative team environment
- Demonstrates passion and talent for games and game development
- Fast learner, takes initiative, and meets deadlines
