Operation Watchman – Intel from Karen

Take a knee, Ghosts, and listen up! This one’s important. We have a high-value national security asset entering Bolivia with us this month: it’s Sam Fisher and he needs our help. A legend in his own right, Sam, code-named Matchwood for this operation, is here in Bolivia to capture a rogue CIA operative who’s selling information on new projects for weapon development to the highest bidder, which just so happens to be the Santa Blanca cartel and the UNIDAD forces. He’s also here to ascertain the situation as it relates to a breach in national security. Rumor has it the weapons development information has been uploaded to a UNIDAD server with a central access point located within the UNIDAD Forward Operating Base (FOB), Vibora, within La Cruz province here in Bolivia. You’ll have to wait until the cover of darkness at 21:00 hours to begin your approach, but remember that this is strictly a stealth operation, which means we can’t risk going loud until we secure the assets we need. Sam will have tactical operation command on this operation and will be with you in the field, and I will be your handler here at the safe house. Your mission is to provide him with a security detail and make sure he gets what he needs off the UNIDAD network. In short, get in undetected, get the intel, and get out by any means necessary. Satellite imagery of the immediate area suggests there are multiple viable routes of infiltration into the UNIDAD compound. The compound is broken up into two different hubs connected by a roadway system, walled off with fences topped with concertina wire and HESCO barriers, as well as, in some places, concrete walls. However, there are some breaches in their security, which I will highlight for you below, but you may pick your own approach based on what you deem necessary. Be aware, however, that the compound has both drone jammer technology and SAM missile batteries, so an aerial approach is ill-advised. Equipment Check Your equipment and what you decide to take with you on this operation will be imperative to your success. Expect heavy resistance once the counter-hack has been initiated; however, at this point in time, we can’t quite tell how much resistance you should expect. We advise that you take either a light machine gun for armor shredding of potential vehicles and suppressing infantry, such as the M249 SAW, or a heavy-bore sniper rifle for taking out armored vehicle’s engine blocks or heavily armored infantry in a single shot, such as the HTI. Alternatively, you could use the M14 with the EXPS scope or ACOG, as it serves a dual purpose function between range and damage output. Since this will be a close-quarters engagement, it may also be wise to consider taking a submachine gun, which will let you get more rounds on target in close proximity due to its increase in fire rate over other weapon types. We recommend either the Vector or MP7. Approach Alpha: I can suggest an approach from the southwestern and southeastern sides of the southernmost hub of the compound. This area is shadowed by a mountainous region, which can give height advantage for immediate line of sight and reconnaissance of OPFOR locations, alarm systems, and SAM batteries, as well as the drone jammer, before you begin your approach. On the northwestern side of the southern hub of the compound, across from the helicopter hangars, you will find a break in the concertina wire and HESCO barriers, which can be vaulted over, granting you access in to the facility. This area, however, is guarded by a sniper tower, as well as several barracks with patrolling guards. Additionally, on the opposite side of the sniper tower and on the southeastern side approach, you will find an open doorway, though security is tight on this side due to two manned helicopter hangars with patrolling guards. Be advised that enemy Apache gunships and Black Hawks are on standby. Maybe you can keep that in mind as an escape route for later. This route is significantly longer on approach to the rendezvous point with Matchwood; however, it provides more immediate cover, as well as alternative access to the drone jammer as you egress from the southern hub to the northern. Approach Bravo: Alternatively, just south of Hoyito village and west of the La Cruz freight yard is the entrance to the main hub of the compound, which has several guard outposts and checkpoints. However, further reconnaissance found a lightly guarded area on the northeastern side of the compound just past a guard tower. This is the most direct route to the rendezvous point with Matchwood; however, the changing guard patterns may make it a bit tricky to infiltrate without detection. This is also the most direct route to the only drone jammer within the compound, which can be disabled by physically pulling the attached lever on the northern side of the array. The problem, however, is that the array is under constant watch by vigilant, rotating UNIDAD guards. Also, remember that you have to remain undetected during your approach to the rendezvous point with Matchwood, so disabling the jammer with explosives is strictly a no-go. Regardless of which approach you decide to use, or whether you craft your own, be sure to be mindful of your surroundings and use the tools you are provided with to gain the advantage. Our rebel friend, Pac Katari of the Kataris 26, will be on standby for enemy spotting, diversions, and guns-for-hire to create distractions and open up windows of opportunity for you and your team to infiltrate the compound. By using the spotting function, you can reveal patrolling guards and their immediate locations, which will help you plan your infiltration route more efficiently. Also, be sure to make use of your diversion lures and flares to attract patrolling guards to areas outside of the area of operations to temporarily remove patrols from your path of egression. This will buy you valuable time to egress or move in unnoticed, into and out of the compound. You may even be able to use this to your advantage to disable or booby-trap the SAM batteries or drone jammer array with C4 explosives to help you out later with exfiltration. The level of resistance upon successful completion of the counter-hack at this point is unknown, but be aware that once the counter-hack has been initiated, you should expect some potentially unfriendly company. I advise that you booby-trap the immediate entry and exit points as you pass through with C4 explosives or mines to quickly eliminate any UNIDAD in close proximity to the terminal, in case you stir up the hornet’s nest. This will buy you valuable time to set up your defensive positions. Exfiltration Keep in mind that once you have successfully completed the counter-hack, you will need to exfil as quickly as possible. There are a few viable routes based on how you proceeded with your infiltration, though the best route is to use the tree tops for cover, which means you want to avoid a southwesterly exfil as much as possible due to the lack of cover. We advise that you head southeast toward the La Cruz Freight Yard. By exiting from the Approach Alpha entry point and following the power lines, you can use the cover of the tree tops to lose pursuing helos. Stay low and on the deck wherever possible, as this will enable you to lose your pursuers more quickly. This is also where that M249 SAW will come into play for suppression and armor shredding. Simply follow the path and powerlines to reach the La Cruz Freight Yard. Once you make it to the La Cruz Freight Yard you should see a small Santa Blanca foot mobile patrol around a helicopter. Eliminate the two to three guards and hitch a ride. Remember to fly low, however, if you didn’t disable the SAM missile batteries on your infiltration route – at least until you are out of range. As you complete your joint effort mission, Operation Watchman, with the legendary Sam Fisher, we want to hear your stories of how you completed the operation. Did you elect to use Approach A or B, or did you craft one of your own? Let us know in the comments below and share your stories! Alternatively, you can head over to the official Ubisoft Forums, where you can discuss the mission at length; you can even submit your own tactics and strategies in our dedicated section for such topics! Also, be sure to link up with your fellow Ghosts to complete the operation together by joining Task Forces on Ghost Recon Network.
