Dev Spotlight: The Environment Art of Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora By Malik Razik

Malik creates spaces that don’t just look beautiful, they tell stories too. From sweeping landscapes to the smallest environmental details, every corner is designed to immerse players and bring the world to life. Here’s what Malik said about working on Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora – From the Ashes.

“Working on Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora – From the Ashes has been an incredible experience. Stepping into the world of Pandora and helping bring a new chapter of it to life for players was both exciting and deeply rewarding. Being part of an expansion that launched alongside the film made the experience feel especially meaningful, as it highlighted the role the game plays within the wider Avatar franchise, helping to expand the world and give players a new way to experience Pandora beyond the big screen.

As an Environment Artist, storytelling through space is central to how I approach my work. I want players to understand the world and its narrative simply by moving through it, from the larger story beats tied to a mission, right down to the smaller details that hint at how Pandora’s inhabitants, and its invaders, have left their mark on the land. Whether it’s subtle environmental storytelling or bold visual moments, every space is an opportunity to reinforce the themes and emotions of the story we’re telling.

For From the Ashes, I had the opportunity to work closely with the lead studio at Massive, collaborating across teams to help introduce something visually distinct from the previous expansions. The arrival of the Mangkwan, the Ash Clan, brought fire and destruction into Pandora’s beautiful biomes, and it was our responsibility to help make their introduction as impactful as possible. We focused on creating a strong first impression that set the tone for everything that followed. Exploring the visual contrast between factions, nature versus industry, life versus destruction, was a challenge I genuinely loved.

What continues to inspire me most is working alongside such talented and passionate people across so many disciplines. The collaboration between different departments and direction is what truly brings these worlds to life. I’m incredibly proud of what we achieved together, and I hope that players felt our vision while exploring Pandora and enjoyed the journey as much as I did creating it.”
