    On my LG CX Oled the graphics seem washed out and darks are to bright. Like HDR is not right in this game, especially in darker scenes indoor etc. Im on series x. Other games dispay fine in HDR! Anyone notice this!

  • Contrary to popular belief, Lorem Ipsum is not simply random text. It has roots in a piece of classical Latin literature from 45 BC, making it over 2000 years old. Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, looked up one of the more obscure Latin words, consectetur, from a Lorem Ipsum passage, and going through the cites of the word in classical literature, discovered the undoubtable source. Lorem Ipsum comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (The Extremes of Good and Evil) by Cicero, written in 45 BC. This book is a treatise on the theory of ethics, very popular during the Renaissance. The first line of Lorem Ipsum, "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet..", comes from a line in section 1.10.32.

    @jappie006 I also have the same issue while playing on the Series X console, and My Sony X950G is calibrated to 2.2 gamma. Nearly every other Ubisoft game I can at least tweak to fit my calibration, but since we only get Max Luminance (which only sets the color value ranges and peak brightness, and if it's too high can result in worse detail and chunky graphics), and we also get exposure which is by far the worst design decision ever made because exposure blows out every tone level instead of giving us exclusive control over black, gamma, and white levels in addition to the peaks. That way, if whether we are on a super dark OLED or mid range, yet calibrated LED HDR10 panel, we have the control over what we think the game should look like. As it is right now, I just quit playing until something is done about this.

    I also played the game without HDR on just to see if the grey filter was still there. It is, but barely noticeable, and I suspect it's there to let people see in dark cutscenes, but what they should be doing is adding a fake (camera) light source instead of blowing out our contrast levels when the game gets dark. But I digress, I hope this issue gets resolved and we get proper HDR calibration options because the one thing I refuse to do is constantly shift between HDR and SDR which requires me to constantly switch not only my console, but my TV settings as well. It's an annoyance we don't need Ubisoft.

    Yeah looks so dull, clearly not a hdr expert who let this pass on release 😕

    @draco619 It is not HDR that is the culprit, it is actually a RGB full to limited conversion which is forced by the game. My LG CX for instance is on black level auto and it thinks it is receiving a "full" signal from the PS5 (also set on auto); I know the PS5 is sending full, because when manually selecting it doesn't refresh/reset my screen. However, AC V is itself converting the signal to RGB limited. This can be fixed by leaving PS5 RGB on auto, and switching to black level low on tv when playing AC V, and back when I play another game. However, this is not how this is supposed to work. I don't know why, how, who etc. implemented this in this game, but he/she should be fired right away.

    This is still a very relevant issue that needs to be fixed.

    Read this comment as well as the rest of the thread (same link that OP shared) for more details.

    Agree, please fix this the way HDR is in this game just looks horrible. Or make at least an option to turn it off. Now each time I have to disable it on my Xbox.

    Just bought valhalla on ps5 and I'd consider it unplayable with how washed out it is. Especially coming from spiderman miles morales on ps5 and ghosts of tsushima which had excellent hdr implementation.

    @iamfirebird360

    Best setting on series x so far is 800 and +10 for me. It still does look way off, but it is playable. They say on PS5 the solution is to play with the black level.

    I've been capturing some HDR footage of my PS5 version for my YouTube channel, and using a tool I created to analyze HDR frames, these are the results I got for the first hour of the game:

    Average Black Level: 0.157 nits (Approximate HDR Code Value 130, 8% signal level)
    Median Black Level: 0.042 nits (Approximate HDR Code Value 101, 4% signal level)

    True Black in 0% of frames analyzed
    Lowest Measured: 0.005 nits (Approximate HDR Code Value 77, 1.5% signal level)

    For reference, black should be 0 nits, and code value 64

    It seems like something really weird is happening at a technical level, as there's a pretty wide variance of black levels on display here. While some raised black levels in foggy areas would not be uncommon, having raised black levels everywhere is bad, and causes the image to appear very washed out with desaturated colors and less impactful highlights as well. It seems like perhaps different visual filters in the game are impacting the black levels in different ways. It seems that the game MIGHT be capable of delivering a true black under the right conditions, as the lowest measured value got pretty close, but under most conditions, it's raised considerably and looks bad. Originally (as per my reddit post linked above) I was assuming there was an incorrect Full to Limited color space conversion happening somewhere in the pipeline, but that would have created a hard line black level at code value 118, and it DOES go below that, so that doesn't appear to be exactly what's happening (although the typical image looks very close to what that would look like).

    In previous games Odyssey and Origins allowed us to manipulate the black level via the brightness control, even when HDR was active. On the new game, the brightness control is disabled when HDR is enabled, preventing us from fixing this issue. A simple fix would be to just unlock that control and let us fix the issue ourselves, but if I were Ubisoft, I'd be looking into how their color grading code is working, because it's causing significantly raised black levels and a washed out image in just about every situation.
