I have no HDR working in Valhalla (PC Ubisoft+) when in the Settings Menu I put the HDR-> On.

The game is still in SDR (checked, many times, different tests)

I have absolutly no problem with the HDR in WD Legion, with the same Nvidia Drivers latest 457.30, the HDR is fine and beautiful in the game.

Of course, Windows 10 is in HDR mode (with all its 3 HDR options activated) and I repeat, it runs ok in HDR in Watch Dogs Legion with the same drivers today.

I have done many verifications to check if it is in HDR or SDR in Valhalla, and I can affirm now that it is clearly in SDR not in HDR.

It very clear with the image in the game with some fires in town for example, and more obvious when you bring the Nvidia interface in game (ALT Z) : the Nvidia interface looks very dark in Valhalla but in WD Legion the Nvidia interface in game looks absolutly shiny very bright, the difference is obvious.

So, I think I am not alone to not have the HDR activated in AC Valhalla (on PC), and I'll hope that a patch will solve this quickly, because the game looks already good in SDR and it will be fabulous in HDR !

    Many thanks in advance !

  • Contrary to popular belief, Lorem Ipsum is not simply random text. It has roots in a piece of classical Latin literature from 45 BC, making it over 2000 years old. Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, looked up one of the more obscure Latin words, consectetur, from a Lorem Ipsum passage, and going through the cites of the word in classical literature, discovered the undoubtable source. Lorem Ipsum comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (The Extremes of Good and Evil) by Cicero, written in 45 BC. This book is a treatise on the theory of ethics, very popular during the Renaissance. The first line of Lorem Ipsum, "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet..", comes from a line in section 1.10.32.

@planit Seconded, HDR is super dark and washed out, FAR inferior quality in my experience.

HDR never worked for me in Origins and Odyssey also. And when i posted on Odyssey Steam forum that HDR doesn't work in that game, some Ubisoft Employee replied that this will be addressed in Valhalla. Well, Valhalla is out and it's still the same mess.

Confirmed, the HDR implementation either is _extremely bad_ of just plain broken. It looks like if the rendered HDR picture is tone mapped into SDR color space, washing out highlights like torches and compressing dark areas into a muddy mess with almost posterized gradients. Without HDR, darker areas are perfectly ok, but highlights are washed out also of course.

I'm playing on a PC with an RTX 3080 connected to a Phillips 55POS9002 TV, but I've found a lot of reports of this bug from people using different platforms and screen brands, like here: https://www.reddit.com/r/AssassinsCreedValhala/comments/js5tom/poor_hdr_implementation_in_ac_valhalla_does_the/
Those people also state that it is working well in WD Legion, which I haven't tested myself yet.

Update: I've kinda solved the problem.

As it turns out, not the implementation is broken, but the settings are.

Turn off HDR in the game settings, then set SDR-brightness to 6 or 7 (depends on your screen), making everything looking to bright and [censored]. Then enable HDR again and behold: The menu background has okayish brightness now! Now use the exposure slider to tweak the images to your liking. Don't trust the preview (it's broken), instead switch back to the game to check how the settings look.

@neovg No. It's still broken. Sun is still too bright and cannot be put to normal.
