Since the sawmill was nerfed to a 1:1 log-lumber ratio I noticed the gameplay got extremely slow and boring.

I am not against the sawmill nerf in general. I think it is better than having a 1:2 or even 1:4 ratio like before

    But I see two problems:

    • On most maps it is impossible to provide enough logs to run 3 sawmills, because either there is not enough forest or woodcutters work too slow
    • There is not enough fish deposits, so we can't boost woodcutters, sawmills and quarries.
    • The Forester (nursery) is much too expensive now, as it requires the precious logs and tools and it also works much too slow.

These are my thoughts about it.

  • Contrary to popular belief, Lorem Ipsum is not simply random text. It has roots in a piece of classical Latin literature from 45 BC, making it over 2000 years old. Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, looked up one of the more obscure Latin words, consectetur, from a Lorem Ipsum passage, and going through the cites of the word in classical literature, discovered the undoubtable source. Lorem Ipsum comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (The Extremes of Good and Evil) by Cicero, written in 45 BC. This book is a treatise on the theory of ethics, very popular during the Renaissance. The first line of Lorem Ipsum, "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet..", comes from a line in section 1.10.32.

@Frodosam1 Agreed. I thought it was absolutely fine the way it was. Its made the start of the game slow right down and you're waiting more than you're building. Why this was done i dont know.

    Hello Frodosam, Asmordeus!

The sawmill nerf has correctly brought in the effects we wanted to see:
Players are now more wary of how they use their Lumber, and the starting area no longer provides sufficient Lumber for the whole match. Very few maps had a challenge for players, specifically The Depths (2v2) and sometimes The Shire (1v1).

We initially set off to smoothen the curve between initial needs and lategame overflow.
We have seen matches end with 300+ Lumber in storages, simply wasting away waiting for stone.
We're now seeing a more balanced equation between Lumber and Stone, but it's not perfect, especially difficult early game.

The problems you point at are really about the starting situation, which we will work together with the community in smoothing out. It was never intended for players to always have enough fish to feed all three building types (logging camp, sawmill, quarry). As you mention, a reduction in building costs could help, or an increase in starting stock.

We will also examine other aspects that may be related, like a reduction of defensive structure cost, or the harbor. Feedback is of course welcome!

Thank you very much for your patience and support,
    Your The Settlers DEV-Team.
