Unsolved Anno 1701 update

Wondering why the Anno 1701 players were not given the Anno 1701 Update from History edition? The History edition could be the base game PLUS Sunken Dragon addon, however I have discovered that I need to purchase yet again the Anno 1701 base game to be able to play multiplayer with my wife who has history edition as our versions are nor compatible. Wondering if this is a patch oversite because normally people never have to purchase the same product twice, right?

The History Edition's are different versions of the original Anno entries, with included updates to optimise them for current PC setups. The original copies of these titles are no longer supported and do not receive updates.
They're different versions to the originals, therefore History Edition updates do not apply to the original versions and multiplayer is not available between the two either.
Both of you will need to own Anno 1701 History Edition to be able to play together, as the original Anno 1701 is not compatible in this sense.
