I have a Radeon RX 5600 XT gfx card with WHQL driver 22.2.1 and the game crashes occasionally. It is not to the point where it is unplayable, but when crashes start, they usually repeat several times until after I have rebooted the computer.

Have reviewed your troubleshooting guide and nothing is applicable.

You crash report tool have submitted... hmm, probably 7-8 crash reports.

    Other PC configuration:

Motherboard: Asus TUF B450M Pro Gamin
    CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600X
    RAM: 32 GBytes DDR4
    Windows: 11 - 21H2

Hey there @CoramDaes; thank you for getting in touch, and I am sorry to hear that you have been experiencing crashes. I understand you have already gone through our troubleshooting guide, but I want to double-check. Is this the guide you followed? As it includes many helpful troubleshooting steps that can help rule out the most common causes for performance-related issues.

Additionally, to ensure a smooth and uninterrupted gaming experience, we have an article explaining the officially recommended Assassin's Creed Odyssey driver versions for NVIDIA and AMD GPUs. You can find this article here. If you have any questions or run into any other issues, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Hi, indeed that is the guide I looked through prior to posting.

I see from the additional link you posted you recommend AMD driver 19.8.2.

I will give that a shot.

    @ubi-gizmo

It would seem that even if the driver is available the installation of it is not.

After uninstalling my updated drivers for my GPU, I restarted the PC and proceeded to install your recommended version, 19.8.2.

Using option Express in the Radeon setup interface caused the installation to diagnose hardware and kept doing that for many minutes until I stopped it manually.
Using option Custom in the Radeon setup interface caused the installation to search for updated drivers and kept doing that for many minutes until I stopped it manually.
    Result: older driver installation failed.

You did notice that I wrote I run W11, right?

I will try another method, been messing with similar issues and games for many years, so nothing really new, but I'll get back.

@coramdaes Those drivers are from 2019 and just aren't going to work with Windows 11. You could try just going back a month or two. About the furthest you can go back would be July 2021

Also make sure you have all the latest Windows updates including any Optional ones, they dropped an Optional "Out of Band" update late last month to fix problem people were having with some games although those will likely be rolled into the scheduled update that was just yesterday

Hey again @coramdaes, thanks for getting back in touch and I am sorry to hear that. I want to apologise as it seems I missed that you were running Windows 11. As kindly mentioned by longjohn119, those driver versions will likely not work with Windows 11. I understand that you are going to try something else and get back in touch, that's absolutely no problem. If you continue to experience issues beyond those extra steps you're taking, please let me know and I will gladly look into it further.

@longjohn119 - thank you for taking the time to help out here, I appreciate it.

It seems that the game is running stable with Radeon Driver Version 21.30.23.01-211018a-373652C as stated in the Radeon Software Control Panel.

    What I did:

    1. Uninstalled all Radeon drivers using Guru3D's utility for that in W11 Safe Mode (a well known resource for those wanting to use a "bigger hammer") DDU: (https://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html).
    2. Checked before and after in DXDIAG that the drivers were actually uninstalled
    3. Installed the earliest WHQL driver for Windows 10 available from the Radeon site, which was that one I mentioned. From here: AMD Radeon™ RX 5600 XT Drivers & Support | AMD (I actually think those might be the same for W11 - Adrenalin 21.10.2 Recommended (WHQL) 456 MB Release Date 10/25/2021)

There is an optional driver update available via Windows Update that you might not want to install , and of course, you should, for now, not update the Radeon driver even if prompted to do so by Radeon Software itself.

I have played three sessions approximately 1-3 hours each since I did this and had no repetition of the crashes.

This does of course not take into account other games that may need the latest driver, so as long as it works for the games you play and you are happy with that everything might be ok.

Might also mention I like the game, heard of the series before and have seen the movie, but zero other experience from the franchise.

Hey there @coramdaes, thank you for taking the time to get back in touch here, and I am glad to hear that you found a solution by switching drivers. I appreciate you sharing these steps for any users who may encounter this thread experiencing a similar issue. I hope these crashes have not taken too much away from your experience with the series. Should you have further questions regarding this or anything else, please do not hesitate to let me know. 🙂

I seem to have spoken to soon.

I was entering Kephalonia Harbour with my ship and the game crashed maybe 300 meters out... I have seen another post about crashes in the night, since it was by night and will check that. However, this was on the sea, so I am inclined to believe running around in daylight on land would still work without crashes.

BTW also following IGN's walkthrough while playing and it is a great help when I get stuck somewhere.

This is exactly why I suggest that people don't upgrade their graphics drivers unless they have an actual reason to do so such as a new game they got needing the latest drivers, the release notes show bug fixes for a game they are having a problem with, or security issues. One rare exception for me was when Nvidia released new drivers for God of War that included the new DLDSR feature which is something I wanted to try and benchmark and luckily they caused no problems in any of my games (Actually the DLDSR feature made a number of my games even better including Odyssey for a loss of a mere 1-2 FPS)

Basically if it ain't broke don't try to fix it and that is especially true with AMD graphics drivers which are notoriously buggy ..... When I had a 5700 I ran the same drivers from February 2020 until August because of a bug in the recording system. Then in October I did a clean install of Windows and all drivers and gave the system to my nephew for gaming and he's used the same drivers for almost a year and only upgraded them for a game he got off of Game Pass that needed newer drivers

NEVER let Windows install drivers for graphics or chipsets, get them directly from the manufacturer ..... There is a way to keep it from happening but Microsoft buried the settings a couple of years ago (It used to be on the Windows Update UI) so I won't get into the nuts and bolts but this link shows you how. Microsoft even changed the message trying to scare you away from turning driver updates off but you can just ignore that. If you use Win 10 Home use the 1st method but if you have Win 10 Pro then the second method is the way to go

Maybe you could consider renaming this thread to ... dunno... Radeon drivers issues or some like that, since I guess this might be relevant for most modern Radeon cards.

    I had no additional crashes.

    @longjohn119
While you are not wrong, some updates are not exclusively directed toward new functionality but also fixing and patching older issues. I am not going to dwell on that argument, since again, you are not wrong, but just throwing out a random "if it ain't broken don't fix it" is just too simple an answer.

    Hello there @CoramDaes!

I'm sorry to hear that you experienced another crash. Thanks for taking the time to update us. Just to clarify, besides the crash experienced in Kephalonia Harbour, have you encountered any additional crashes following your driver update? Or has this been the only crash following the update?

We'd be happy to rename this thread for you as well! How does "Experiencing random crashes as a result of older Radeon drivers" sound? If you have an alternative title in mind that better matches the issue you've experienced, please let us know and we'll update the thread title accordingly.

    Thanks! 😊

No, no additional crashes, went far south-east with my level 10 Adrestia, far beyond skull marked ships and thunderstorms. Salvage from the see is better in higher level areas.

Perhaps "Experiencing random crashes as a result of newer Radeon drivers that the game might not fully support" ?

I realize it may be hard to grasp in this IT World of continuous upgrades, but the driver change is actually a downgrade to a previous version, maybe several previous versions. 🤓  That would be the heart of the matter.

Thanks for letting me know that you haven't been experiencing any more crashes in-game, @CoramDaes! I'm glad to hear that your salavaging has been successful as well! 😄

I've now also changed the title of the thread to your suggestion. I think it's a great summary of the issue at hand! Hopefully, it can help other players who may be experiencing a similar issue in their own games. We can always edit it as well if you'd like to tweak it or change it back to the original title.

If you require support with anything else, please don't hesitate to let us know.

    Thanks! 😊

@coramdaes And those issues will be listed in the Release Notes. If a game you have is not listed or is working fine then upgrading simply isn't needed and you run the risk of having the problem you just experienced .... That's why I say don't upgrade unless you have a valid reason

Back in June Nvidia released new drivers and they broke Odyssey, then in July AMD released new drivers and they broke Odyssey ..... Personally I didn't have any problems on my box (Nvidia 2080 Super) or the box I gave my nephew (AMD 5700) because neither of us updated the drivers. Another thing you have to take into consideration with driver updates is neither Nvidia nor AMD test their drivers with older games, just current releases so they have no idea they even created a problem until the people playing those old games start complaining

If you are going to upgrade your drivers every month whether they need it or not then be prepared ahead of time to roll back your drivers if they cause a problem in one of your games .... Because eventually it will happen and likely more than once a year ... If it ain't broke don't try to fix it ....

    Hey @coramdaes

Thanks for adding that image to show what to look out for. Just as a suggestion, if you ever come across a driver issue, please also report it to your GPU manufacturer so they can be aware of it too and hopefully get a fairly quick update out to resolve it. Nvidia have an article here how to report issues to them and AMD here: (https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/faq/amdbrt).

There is also a member of one of their support teams who has dropped by on our forums a few times after players have gone there to report an issue to let players know they are working on a fix for it.

@coramdaes You can turn that off completely by following the directions in the article I linked to in an above post

Then you'll never even see it ever again or any other driver updates from Windows ..... It's one of the first things I do when I do a fresh install right after turning off all the Windows "Phone Home" garbage
