    Hi everyone,

I just quit playing AC Odyssey after 56hrs because I found it just so boring and repetitive (I realize this is subjective btw). As always the open world is fantastic and I'm a huge fan of massive open worlds. However HOW that world is dealt with is what matters. In RDR2, Witcher 3 etc. the locations and missions felt different and new.

In Odyssey it felt copy-paste. The "missions" are go here, get that, go there, kill this person then come back, loot bandit camp, loot treasure, ????? icons all over the place I found it mind numbingly dull.

    Bandit Camp

    • Kill leader
    • Loot treasure 0/2
    • Find tablet 0/1

...again and again and again. Made the game feel like Just Cause. All thats missing is a % meter on the top right.

This made me sad because the open world is so nice but even a nice world cant save the boring game mechanic so I uninstalled it.

So - is Valhalla more of the same? Or did they make changes? Do the missions feel copy-paste? Bandit camps and more bandit camps? The setting looks amazing I have to say. Still haven't decided if I want it and will be nice to see everyone's thoughts. Thanks!

  • Contrary to popular belief, Lorem Ipsum is not simply random text. It has roots in a piece of classical Latin literature from 45 BC, making it over 2000 years old. Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, looked up one of the more obscure Latin words, consectetur, from a Lorem Ipsum passage, and going through the cites of the word in classical literature, discovered the undoubtable source. Lorem Ipsum comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (The Extremes of Good and Evil) by Cicero, written in 45 BC. This book is a treatise on the theory of ethics, very popular during the Renaissance. The first line of Lorem Ipsum, "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet..", comes from a line in section 1.10.32.

I am happy to tell you that AC Valhalla has a lot more variety with its main missions and side missions. Also, the map size for Valhalla is a good size - not too much. I always found Odyssey's map to be a bit much. Valhalla is actually one of my all time favorite games, I can wholeheartedly recommend it to you.

EDIT: I also wanted to add that the side quests in Valhalla are called World Events, and each one is unique. None of the copy-paste stuff that Odyssey had.

Still the best game for me! #1 in my game list.
already about 290+ hours spent in Valhalla! This is totally unique experience.

Very glad to hear that, thanks for this info. The "world events" specially sounds very cool.
Admittedly I am a big fan of massive open worlds (my other fav Ubi game is GR Wildlands and its massive map of Bolivia) but I do understand where you're coming from. Odyssey is a massive map and the ship sailing also makes it a drag to get around.

What can fix that problem is if game designers let the player teleport anywhere on the map. Not just designated areas. This will take the tedium out of having to traverse the same route to and from a mission. You can slow-travel the first time to enjoy the scenery and teleport back. Or just teleport both ways!

Great, I will wait till all DLC is out and then get the complete edition with everything!

As you mentioned, YES... wait until everything is done with Valhalla before buying it... hopefully by then they will have fixed all the numerous bugs and glitches that continue to plague this game!! Although, keep in mind, they plan to continue adding content for this game for at least another year... so you're probably looking at 18 months or so for a fully completed game.

Sorry to hear you didn't enjoy Odyssey, it was my very first AC game and I absolutely loved it... putting in over 300 hours my first play through. I think it helps if you're a big fan of Greek history, which I am, so seeing locations come to life that I'd so often read about was part of the enjoyment of the game. Also the fact that I've mostly played MMORPGs, the 'fetch' quests were so common there that it didn't even bother me in Odyssey.

After Odyssey I played Origins, and hated it. It was definitely a huge step backwards, and even though I also am a big fan of ancient Egypt, I just couldn't enjoy all the sand... sand... and more sand. Plus, many of the game mechanics, especially the ship battles, was absolutely horrible compared to Odyssey.

On to Valhalla... and once again... huge fan of viking history. I'm a descendant of vikings, so I was totally looking forward to this game. Yet, it was a disappointment in many way. First, unlike Odyssey which was very accurate historically- other than a few things they had to change for game-play reasons... but Valhalla has been described by UBI as a "viking fantasy" and that's exactly what it is. Very historically INACCURATE. Second disappointment... it's dreary, with dead bodies, murder victims, mutilated corpses and sad 'final notes' littering the country; unlike Greece which was bright and beautiful, England is just sad and depressing. Third, while Odyssey had very little puzzles or things you needed to spend time figuring out, Vahalla is basically one BIG puzzle!! I mean, almost everything you have to spend time trying to figure out... world events usually offer NO CLUE what you're supposed to do, you have to sometimes spend 10-15 minutes of more trying to figure out how to get into a location to loot a chest, sometimes lootable items (skill books, gear) are noted on your map but inaccessible until you are on a certain quest, Fly Agarics are another puzzle you sometimes have to really pay attention to figure out, cairns you have to stack stones to a specific height- which can get downright annoying, standing stones you have to figure out what place and angle to put an image together, then there's the animus anomalies which have you going through another type of puzzle. I play a game to PLAY, not spend hours just standing around trying to figure something out!! So for me, Valhalla has also been a source of frustration and I've probably spent as much time on Youtube for solutions to puzzles than I have spent actually playing the game. And yeah, UBI puts poisonous snakes in extremely cold locations because apparently they didn't realize that snakes are cold-blooded and basically go dormant in the cold- and definitely go underground in winter. Oh but that's right, this is a 'viking fantasy' game. *eyeroll*
I do enjoy the combat in Valhalla slightly more than Odyssey. Now that I'm back playing yet another (fourth I think) NG+ playthrough of Odyssey, I do miss the variety of combat that Valhalla offers... whereas in Odyssey you basically had the same enemies with same type of attacks 90% of the time. The only time you get randomly attacked in Odyssey is usually from wolves (which are downright annoying), with occasional bandits here and there... but in Valhalla they have such a variety of enemies and 'random attacks' that it makes exploration a bit more fun. I also do appreciate the RAIDS, having fellows go along with you in overland combat is fun, but would be nice if you could also have your Jomsviking Lieutenant accompany you as a "companion" in all overland content instead of just during raids would be even better.
The settlement is fun and a nice edition, I guess in Odyssey it was 'upgrade your ship' and in Valhalla it's 'upgrade your settlement'... the settlement is more useful BTW. 😉
I also enjoyed the Treasure of Britain cave exploration as well as Flyting... probably one of my favorite "activities" in Valhalla... sad that there is too few of them to complete.

As for DLCs... I was not happy with the addition of "Atlantis" in Odyssey... I would have rather had more to do in the REAL ancient world instead of traveling off to a fantasy-based ISU land of illusion. Then when they added "Asgard" in Valhalla as yet another fantasy-based ISU land of Illusion (and done poorly IMO I might add)... I was over it. Now I hear they are adding yet another 'Asgard' installment, so yet another addition to the game I'll likely not even bother with.

Overall... I DO like both for different reasons. Odyssey I love because of it's historical content... Valhalla I like because of it's combat system (dual-wielding is awesome even if it is unrealistic in real life)... wielding two spears or two short-swords ROCKS!! Oh, and Odyssey... I get the fact you wanted us to utilize the broken spear... but c'mon, the mainstay of ancient Greek battle was the spear and SHIELD!!

Just thought I'd add my two cents. I know it seems I ragged on Valhalla, but I do find it enjoyable. They have fixed many problems along the way, but many still do persist. You'll want to make a LOT of game saves, because you'll probably have to 'reload' previous saves many times due to glitches (unless they fix them all before you actually buy the game). Also, they haven't added NG+ and the current "post production director" previously stated that they 'don't even know how they will add it'- which is a statement I find very disconcerting given this feature should have been planned right from the start.
