Creative Spotlight #6: CosplayPan

The Rainbow Six community has a lot of outstandingly creative people that continue to amaze us with beautiful, funny and creative contributions. In this series, we want to highlight some of them.

Our newest addition to this series is the amazingly dedicated CosplayPan!

Hello Pan! Thank you for taking the time to answer a few questions for us!

Please introduce yourself and tell us - who are you outside of Rainbow Six Siege?

Pan: Hi, my name is Pan, but I’m better known in the community as CosplayPan. I’m a 37 year old medic, currently working in Dubai.

What got you into creating cosplays and when did you start?

Pan: My cosplay journey started with the movie “The Three Musketeers”. I liked the character of Aramis (played by Luke Evans) so much I decided to create his costume. It was my first self-made costume, even if my mom helped me a lot back then ;)

What do you like most about cosplaying?

Pan: What I like most about cosplaying is bringing the digital character to life and becoming another person! What I also enjoy a lot is meeting other likeminded people online on social media or at events.

How do you start a new cosplay and what’s your process of creating it?

Pan: When I see a character I want to cosplay, I check his bio and try to assemble as much background information as possible. For me, cosplay is not only about wearing the costume, but about playing and living this character for that moment as well. Is the character grim, friendly or angry? How does he behave? Are there any special ways to portray him while walking, running or fighting? Therefore, the background story and lore is very important to me in order to create the perfect cosplay. After that part, I start collecting all the items I need for creating the costume like materials, paint, weapons and so on. Afterwards the crafting process itself begins. While I’m pretty good at sewing and forging metal, I have to admit I’m no good at painting stuff. laughs

What about Rainbow Six Siege caught your attention as a cosplayer?

Pan: Well, I’m a huge fan of Tom Clancy. I’ve read his novel “Rainbow Six”, played all the games in this universe and I got addicted to Rainbow Six Siege right after my first encounter with it in the Beta. For me, the best thing about Rainbow Six Siege is the variety of characters in the game. Every character has an individual background story and a unique look. It is really difficult to not fall in love and cosplay the operators.

Who is your favorite operator and why?

Pan: My favorite operator to play is Ash! When I played a lot, I used to pick her as she is the ultimate rusher. She’s fast and agile and that combined with her R4-C assault rifle and her grenade launcher made her my first choice! And if I was a girl, I would totally cosplay her... Visually, my favorite operator is Blackbeard. In my opinion he is the most badass looking character in the game and he has the nicest beard!

Tell us about the best experience you have had while cosplaying a Rainbow Six Siege character.

Pan: My best experience while cosplaying a Rainbow Six Siege character was the Paris Major in 2018. I had a great time there together with my huge Siege family. We had so much fun during this event, which is why it is my number one experience, directly followed by the Six Invitational 2019 in Montreal.

You made a stunningly accurate cosplay of the operator Kaid. How did you make his dagger?

Pan: Thank you for the compliment and yes indeed: the first time I saw Kaid I almost cried. It was like a gift from the Rainbow Six Siege team to me, because I share a lot with Kaid. His dagger was a very cool prop and I was able to carry it with me at events, after I removed the blade. The handle was done using a camel bone as base material and the cutting was done by a cnc machine from a friend. Without the cosplay guide and its references, it would have been an impossible task, so I’m really grateful for it!

Do you plan to do more Rainbow Six Siege cosplays? Anything you can reveal already?

Pan: Absolutely! I’m working on a new operator right now and the reveal will be in late autumn of this year. While I won’t spoil the surprise, I can tell you it’s an elite skin and I’ll need to shave my beard—at least partially. ;)

What would be your advice for people who want to start cosplaying as well?

Pan: First of all, you should like (or even better—love) the character you want to cosplay. Secondly, don’t hesitate to get help with your first cosplay! Ask friends, other cosplayers or the community! It’s an amazing feeling when people help you and you will be surprised how much feedback you will get. And most importantly: just do it! Don’t hesitate to try it out. Good luck and I’m sure you will do great!
