A good defense is the best offense

After you build up a strong military army you are most likely to either use them to defend your territory or conquer your enemies. There are three (3) defensive structures in “The Settlers” that will punish anyone rushing ahead without a plan. These structures will help you defend your territory and make it as hard as possible for enemies to conquer your lands. While siege units can make short work of them, defensive structures never cease to be useful, as enemies' siege units still have to engage them. And always remember, static protection is only as strong as its weakest spot...

Scarecrow: The scarecrow defensive structure is the cheapest of the 3. The scarecrow tower has high hit points (HP) and forces enemy units to attack it. It works as a passive taunt.

[TSR] A good defense is the best offense - Bastion Tower

Bastion: This defensive structure has medium requirements when it comes to construction cost. Its main function is to attack other enemy units from range. However, it also comes with an active ability – you need to trigger this ability – where the structure heals itself.

[TSR] A good defense is the best offense - Tower

Tower: The tower needs more construction materials compared to the other two. It also attacks enemy units at range and it comes with an active ability that will unleash a rain of fire around the structure itself.

Defensive structures will help players with multiple tasks - securing an area, blocking a chokepoint, threatening a region or having a safe retreat. Finding that perfect balance between offense and defense can be a challenging task. Defensive structures can be incredibly valuable and important assets by slowing down your enemies on their quest for dominance and giving you time to plan your next attack. Developing a strong defense is therefore a vital aspect of the game and may be the key to victory!
